May ’22 Games

Wow, you get you head down to do something creative and next minute you’ve nearly missed the month! And the publish button didn’t work so a very late post!

Mothers Love – 7th Edition Cthulhu, 1920s

May’s games start with a possible contender for game of the year! We were back at the Blue beetle club where last summer we were going through the ‘Tales from Miskatonic valley’ from Stygian Fox. My character for the game was Frankie B Private Detective who is getting to that point where as a player I’m getting quite protective of him. He’s a crack shot, has the insight better than most Psychologists and is able to convince you of whatever he needs!

The set-up for the game was tied into my character’s law enforcement contacts and they asked Frankie B and Co to investigate some bank robberies where we found out where the criminals may be heading – Innsmouth! It’s a brave adventure writer to take on the setting of one of the most famous stories in the Cthulhu Mythos but we were in good hands as the author was none other than Seth Skorkowsky

So what was the game like? Wow, it did not disappoint! Frankie’s law enforcement story tied in nicely and it was great fun to play him trying to do the right thing even when we as players knew we should get the hell out of Innsmouth as quickly as possible. We were taking of routes out of time if the mob turned against us! And it was in the knife edge environment where it could all go wrong at the drop of a hat that there was a really chilling moment that I’ve not experience for many a year playing Call of Cthulhu. Keeper Hedge + this scenario are a great combination!

What did I enjoy the most? The Atmosphere! Having business in Innsmouth and being tolerated by those we met was great. Also having the chance to explore the town and see the aftermath of “the plague” that killed off a lot of the population was amazing! What would I have wanted more of in the adventure? Well that would be cover! Frankie was seriously shot – whilst in cover! I’m going to be sour here and lament the days of the old rules where if you were in cover you couldn’t get shot! The 7th Ed rules were spot on and the dice rolls too so everything was correct which meant a guy was able to lean out of and upstairs window a block away and shot Frankie in cover! (Refer to my previous comments about being protective of Frankie) So if you find your character in a similar situation – shot and dying be gracious about it. The Keeper is not out to get you – the dice are!!

Vicid – Delta Green, 2015

If you recall in April, I’d created a bad ass Delta Green investigator who has the slight draw back of having low sanity! With a nearly 60% chance of failing sanity it was tricky to achieve anything during the first adventure and my character’s sanity didn’t improve that much! So when Keeper Stef set us up for our first proper mission I wasn’t hopeful of what my character could achieve so I tried to be supportive of the others in the group.

We were assigned to investigate a death and had to work our way into and out of crime scenes to find out what was going on whilst keeping our activities covert. This meant a lot of role-playing and investigating as we put the puzzle together. We had to repeat a step or two and didn’t quite get the most direct path to the end but it was and enjoyable adventure. Sure enough my character went insane at the vital moment but fortunately his kit proved useful so always pay attention to what your fellow investigators in case it can help them!

The inevitable fail!

What did I enjoy the most? The chance to roleplay and figure out how I could get the information I wanted but maintain my cover.  What would I have wanted more of in the adventure? Well, more sanity would have been nice but Keeper Stef did let me use my combat skills during my insanity which was appreciated. No, I think this was a good all round Delta Green adventure and I hope more are like this.
